Hello,
Compusec has few utilities for recovering from a disaster. See:

I have been able to recover twice using the above utilities.
As far as your question about master/slave drive, I think you can buy
a adapter from your local electronic store that lets you plugin the
notebook HDD into any desktop computer as a IDE slave.
