[FDE] FDE Impact analysis: Tools / method used to get thenumbers?

Hi, Saqib.
Thanks a lot for your answer; don't worry about "late"; what matters is to
get a response at all.
I wanted to ask you if you could give a bit more information on the specific
utility you used (name, who makes it, etc.). I work for a security software
development company and we have good relationship with hardware/software
vendors, so it's quite likely our devs. know the tool.
Apart from that, I wanted to ask about the specs of the computer(s) used in
the test. I'd like to do some benchmarking of our own products, to see if
the impact we have is consistent with that of other products out there; for
that, I'd need to set up a similar system. I know that what I should really
do is try to get my hands on the products myself, and do a real benchmark,
but at the moment I don't think I can get the resources needed for that, so
I'll have to settle for a "rough" benchmark and see what it turns out.
We've been taking some measurements using HDTACH
(http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach) and now I've
stumbled on IOMeter (http://www.iometer.org/, "Iometer is an I/O subsystem
measurement and characterization tool for single and clustered systems"), a
project that Intel begun and that now is Open Source, and it looks
interesting, as it lets you simulate different workloads.
I really believe it'd be interesting to try to do some benchmarking with a
setup that others might replicate, so the results are more meaningfull for
everybody.
Just my 0,002
Thanks a lot in advance
Javier Jarava

Hello Javier,
Sorry for the late response. I used a File Access Timer utility. This
utility is for limited distribution to only disk management software
(e.g. defrag) vendors. It can read a complete file, and you can define
the block size. It produces excellent stats.
However I think one could write this utility in C. It shouldn't be that
complex.
If you going to perform the test, please try with smaller file sizes.
That would be interesting.
