Hi Lance,

1. No, drives are not using any CPU resources. The encryption is done inside
the drive and transparent to the host.

2. Drive has no idea about "files". The encryption is done on the sector
level.

Subject: [FDE] Processing Question

Two FDE questions. This applies specifically to hard drive FDE, such
as the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series or the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 FDE.

1. Encryption Processing. I know the keys are stored on the drives,
but do the drives also have their own chips for the actual encrypting/
decrypting, or do they use any of the laptops CPU for the actual
processing?

2. Is each file encrypted to the hd as its own, unique seperate file,
or is there some other process used?

Thanks!

lance
